having grown some marigolds from seeds and now that i have planted them out in the flower beds and pots, they are being eaten and only the stems are left. I can't see anything that is doing this - any ideas and can I sprinkle something around the plants?

Could be slugs and snails Guest. You can sprinkle slug pellets around - you can get "organic" ones that are supposed to be wild life friendly. They contain ferric phosphate I think, not metaldehyde which poisons birds that eat the snails that ate the pellets...
Plants where only the stems are left are unlikely to regrow if they were small plants when eaten.
In the meantime, to treat them before you can get the pellets, you could go out with a torch after dark and see if you can pick off and squash the pests.
