Please can you identify 1) the 'coarse grass' type plant self sows all over - 2 pics. one shows seed head (long stem), one shows close up of leaves
2) trailing plant with variegated leaves - mauve flowers (not in pic.) in early summer
Any help appreciated

the grass to me looks like pendulous sedge (could be wrong) and the climber looks very much like vinca vine. if i am wrong others will correct :)

My first thought on the grass was Carex Pendula too from the seedheads and I also agree with the Vinca.

yes I go with Carex pendula and Vinca major.

Agree, and both a royal pain as far as I'm concerned - you can keep the vinca under control by pulling the growths up in the air after flowering and chopping them off at about 2 inches, but the Carex will seed itself everywhere, and a large one has a very big rootball, not the easiest to dig out.

It certainly is a pain. I planted it in spite of Goy advice not to but its had to go - and seedlings are still appearing in my containers.

I think that Carex must be one of The Thugs of the World & I'm very glad I never planted it in my garden. Whip it out quick!
