Climbing roses. I have never had luck with rose bushes. If it wasn't heavy white fly infestation it was Japanese beetle skeletonization. Now, I have decided to give it one more try. I have a trellis fixed to my garden shed and would like to send a climbing rose up it. It's in full sun, clay soil and I'm zone 6. I would very much appreciate your recommend ations for a climbing rose to plant. Thank you.

19th century roses Zephirine Drouhin (deep pink) might be just hardy enough for you - lovely perfume virtually thornless - or Aimee Vibert (creamy white) - I used to have this on a north facing wall (UK Midlands) and it did very well.
Mid 20th century ; Swan Lake, Climbing Iceberg, Clair Matin.... All 'tried and tested' over years. So many to choose from!

I have Zephtine Drouaine, Climbing iceberg and New Dawn [from the original RHS agm winner 1935/6] all have survived well in partial shade and down to -16centigrade.

Excellent choice of a Victorian rose to go with your gorgeous Victorian house. Hope it does well for you. Dig a hole a lot bigger than you might think to stop the clay becoming a sump under your rose. Add a good layer of grit and then lots of organic material. Throw in a handful of mycorrhizal rooting powder to give the best possible start.
