I have never heard it said that wasps are attracted by Viburnum but some of them flower in winter and spring so wasps being out before the bees they might be attracted to them. I used to depend on them visiting my cherry and plum trees which flowered really early, because the bees were not around.

I wonder if there's a nest nearby ...... or something else attracting them Sheila and they just happen to be close to your shrub.

Are you sure they are wasps and not hover flies? If the Viburnum is covered in greenfly then you would get lots of either hoverflies or wasps. At this time of year wasps eatr greenflies.

A few years ago, wasps built a fine nest in our Viburnum plicatum ‘Mariesii’' in Wiltshire, about four feet off the ground. Last year, they did the same thing. A week ago, we visited a garden in Somerset, where they proudly showed us their wasps' nest in their Viburnum plicatum ‘Mariesii’', knowing nothing of ours. Surely not just a coincidence? The wasps cause no trouble, so we are happy to have them.
