Help, what to do with our lovely Olive

United Kingdom Gb

We have been given a 2.6 inch high Olive tree that is carrying lots of tiny olives. However, it needs re potting. We plan to grow it in a container. Is it alright to re pot now in July??
Also what soil etc would be best to use?
Your reply hugely appreciated
many thanks

First of all, welcome to GoY; second - go into update question and remove your email address!

Third - Advice from the Eden Project on Can I grow olives in a pot:

"Certainly, olives do well in containers. When you buy your tree, pot it on into a larger pot, preferably terracotta rather than plastic and use a loam-based compost like a John Innes no. 3. Add 20% horticultural grit to improve the drainage. Place in a sunny position, keep the soil moist during the growing season and feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month. In winter you can reduce watering but don’t allow the compost to dry out completely."

And (for on going care)

Choose a straight-sided pot 3-4 inches bigger than the one it's in at the moment and re-pot in spring every couple of years until you get to as big a pot as you have room for - you should be aiming for something at least 2ft diameter and as deep. Avoid using a potbellied/urn shared pot while the olive is still small as you will have to smash it in order to remove the tree.

Hi, welcome to GoY, I agree with Urbanite, but am intrigued as to how a 2.6 inch tall olive tree can grow lots of olives, lol, I presume you mean 2.6 metres, Derek.

I took it as 26 inches.
