I have a red bud tree I want to plant. Will the roots follow water?

Well, not like the Willow family. It's only a small tree, but keep it well away from any buildings, as tree roots spread out and if they're too close to your home they could damage the foundations.

One other thing - these trees do better if planted during cool, rainy weather, usually in spring or fall, or winter in mild climates. Planting when the weather is hot and dry reduces the chances of the plant settling in and growing.

Otherwise agree with previous answer, with the caveat that all trees and plants will put out roots towards a source of water, particularly if the soil is otherwise too dry for them, but that source might just be under paving, where its damper, if you're worrying about drains or pipes.
