Can I put used tomato bags in the composter as there are thousands of tiny white roots in the bags

I would say no. Tomatoes seem to be a magnet for all kinds of problems. They get blight, nematodes and all sorts of other pathogens. Don't contaminate your compost bin then spread them around the garden. Just bag them and get them out.

As long as there was no problem with the plants, like Blight, we have always composted ours. Not had any problems doing it.
Blighted plants are not used though.

By far the best use of spent compost from tomatoes is as a mulch in the garden for plants other than tomato relatives (Solanaceae).

Thank you all very much wont risk it but will spread it over the flower beds out local tip limits you to how many bags of garden waste you can take per week.

I ve done both spread and compost for 20 yrs + and as long as there is no blight or virus as previously mentioned the little white roots decompose returning nutrients to the soil/compost.
