I cannot seem to grow beetroot properly

7 weeks ago I prepared an area in my raised bed, soaked the beetroot "seed", and sowed 3 lines as directed. Nothing came up. I assumed it had been too cold.
4 weeks ago I did the same thing again and 3 came up.
So I resorted to my usual method - setting the seeds in small pots which I know will work, then planting them out in the beds.
But surely I shouldn't have to do this ? Or should I ?

I'm not sure why your beets aren't growing. Mine are well on their way.

Check for the following:

Soil should be moist, dark & rich, very loose. They will not grow well in clay soil. Trace element 'boron' must be present in the soil. Beets must have full sun to grow. You don't need to soak the seeds, just plant them roughly 3 inches apart and water them every day. Keep bed weed free. They should sprout in 7-10 days. Beets don't transplant well so that's not advisable. They are a cold season crop so 'cold' won't bother them. Cold is actually beneficial for beets because it keeps all the pests away.

Beets are very easy to grow. Once you plant the seeds, you thin them once, then just keep ground moist until they mature.

Make sure the soil is dark, rich, fertile & drains well. It should be very loose. Add sand if necessary but don't make cement.

Thanks B, Apart from soaking them, which someone recommended to me I got everything right as you said.
It's a mystery.

humm that is very strange! They should be growing fine - - unless something is eating the seeds before they have a chance to sprout. Are the birds or something eating your beet seeds? Try using netting of some kind.

Hank, try again now. My understanding of growing beetroot is that they require a little heat to get them to germinate. Just like parsnips, the seed packets suggest that they are planted too early for my liking. The wet and cold conditions which we have experienced a few weeks' ago would make the seeds rot off. If you are a mind to, then you could also plant singly between bedding plants as the foliage is also attractive. And yes, don't soak before planting.

Thanks for the suggestions, will try them next time, but I now have 30 beetroot seeds in small pots as I did last year with great success.
