I purchased a couple of small japanese Acers in 4" pots ,the advice was to pot on gradually in slightly bigger pots,I would like to place as centerpieces in very large containers surrounded by bedding, can I do this ?

If you do this sink the smaller pots into the centre of the large on. You will need to repot into larger ones as your Acers grow.

I.e., keep the acers in their original pots, or just bump them up to 6" pots, and set them pot and all in the center of the big pot. Keep your pruning shears handy, so that the bedding doesn't smother the trees, since they grow much more slowly.

Thanks very much for the advice, never thought of placing pots in the pot ,I think small bedding plants will be the best bet and chosen to complement the trees
