I have a large white hydrangea which has been spectacular this year but the white flowers are now brown and scorched and look a real mess. When can I cut them off and when can I prune the plant down a bit as it has put on so much growth this year (what hasn't)?

Hello Mary.

It's best to leave the old flowers on the plant over the winter, to protect the new growth from frost.

For pruning advice (on anything) go to the RHS website - it will tell you everything you need to know.

If its a paniculata variety you can cut them off - these have more cone shaped flowers compared to the round mopheads. With the latter, you are supposed to leave them on for a bit of extra protection during winter.

If your flowers were the mophead shape and you prune the bush well back now you will get no flowers next year.

How do I say thanks?
