I have a bench in my greenhouse with 5 inch sides, full of a mixture of sieved leafmould, garden soil, and compost.
About a week ago I set 7 different types of tomato in SEPARATE pots of leafmould, potting compost and M.P. Compost, to see which did best.
But I dropped a few tomato seeds in the mixture in the bench.
Guess which came up first - the few I spilt in the bench and none of the ones in the pots is showing yet !
Not sure why, all were treated similarly.

The larger mass of soil is more even in temperature and moisture levels, which is going to make germination easier.

also they probably had more light. light is needed for germination so if you covered the seed with compost that will be why. I cover my seed with a small layer of vermiculite.

Hank - Those are ones to save and plant out. They'll also be the first to give you tomatoes.

Well, well, well. I'd never have thought of any of those things. Dammit - I've no idea which toms they are, but they'll be welcome. Thanks guys.
