I don't know what you were told before, but its definitely Oenethera speciosa - it has various common names such as Pink Ladies, Showy Evening Primrose,Pink Evening Primrose, Amapola, Mexican primrose, but they're all just common names, not varietal ones.

Be aware that it becomes quite a thug, spreading by seeds and underground stems.

ok thanks on my clay hardly anything spreads should keep it in check and yes it was hautefort in france near brive i just sowed the wrong one which was a very small "showey pink" and was a bit disappointed as my garden now refuses to except anything small
and is totally dwarfed in the summer by other huge plants
