could you recommend flowering plants or small shrubs for a shady part of the garden. Sandy soil.

I suggest the Autumn Twist Encore Azalea - a handsome evergreen with large purple, pink & white flowers. It grows to 4 feet and blooms 3x per year, Spring, Summer & Fall. No pruning required. Here is a video

I have had great success with New Guinea Impatiens sold as an annual which can be potted or planted. Does great in the shade in the summer, then as the days shorten and cool it can be moved to another part of the garden which has full sun. It comes in a variety of almost fluorescent colors.

You could go onto an online garden centre like Crocus and select shrubs and filter in small, shade, soil type and a list of suitable shrubs should appear.

This is what I had in my last garden. I decided to create a white flower garden. I used white lilies, hydrangeas, hostas, sarcococca, white flowering periwinkle, evergreen ferns, white flowering bugle, carex oshimensis ‘Evereste’. I was amazed at how well everything grew in a very sandy soil. But then it gives such sharp drainage, which is good in a potentially soggy shady area. You do need to feed your plants a bit more, but a regular feed with liquid seaweed solution does the job.
