This curious looking plant has appeared this year but the label has been lost and we can't remember where it came from. The stem is rather bamboo-like. Any thoughts?

It is Disporum longistylum. I have it and it goes on to make lovely black berries over the winter.
good in semi shade into deep shade.

That's great, thank you. This garden is also very shady, cultivated by my partner, who thinks he got this plant from Julian Sutton, once of Desirable Plants in Devon. As there's only a single plant, will we get berries?

Yes you should do. I only have the one plant but it puts up lots of shoots. I have had plants from Julian before but I got mine up in the North East at a plant fair. Its an unusual one and I love it.

Wish I could get hold of that one.
