Skinny Leeks!

Hello everyone, I’m getting some lovely weather at the moment on the west coast 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 😊

I was wondering if anyone can tell me why my leeks (Musselburgh variety) are very skinny? Online advice suggests they should have a fair sized girth 😆 but mine don’t. They’re the height I believe leeks should be, just very thin. I followed all the instructions on spacing and not pressing them into the hole…

Thanks in advance
Marie x

When did you dib them in? Should've been July / August

If not possible cause is sown too late, not long enough growing time

Trouble is that at this time of year they will soon be sending up flower shoots, which means the central part of the stem will be too hard to use. I'd dig them all up and chop them before its too late altogether. You may need to remove the central stem if its hard. You can normally use Musselborough right through late winter into very early spring but they won't be any improvement from now on.

Sow them now under glass for the coming season and they should overwinter nicely. They can be planted out around the time you dig your first early potatoes.

Thank you both, I think I might have planted them out too late… 🤦‍♀️ Have now sown the next lot and will remember to put them out a bit earlier x
