I am creating a new bed. It is going to be circular/oval in shape and I have two clematis which I hope to put in a large pot with an obelisk as the centrepiece. One is President and the other is Warsaw Nike. Has anyone any experience of doing something like this. The bed will have full sun and be fairly sheltered. Ay advive gratefully received. I live in Kent. UK

Clematis have a large root system and unless that intended pot is AT LEAST 2' wide and 2' deep the plants will fail to thrive.

The roots of clematis need a lot of shade so you'll have to cover the top of the (very large) pot with stones so that evaporation and sunlight are stopped.

The water/moisture needs of these vine plants is massive so you'll have to have the hosepipe on them for 10 minutes at a time - probably twice a week in the growing months.

I think it would be a far better idea plant the plants into the ground where their roots and the moisture loss will be minimal - you could put stones over the ground easier too.
