What to do with a hellebore bought at this time of year? This is a variety called 'Yellow Wilgenbroek', and is yellow all over. I know they are dormant in this season, making no leaf growth. But does that mean they are not going to make any growth at the roots either? If so, what would be the value of my gently teasing out the roots from the rootball with an implement as we usually do, to plant it? In fact, might it damage those roots and might it not be able to repair them, if their roots are not doing any growing? Should I therefore keep it in its pot for now and wait until the autumn to plant it?

It doesn't look very happy in its pot! I'd plant it (after some rain?) and keep it well watered until autumn. It will make new roots even though the top isn't growing.

It arrived a couple of days ago from Crocus. Their plant quality control is generally very good. That is why I would be surprised if there were anything unhealthy about this one. I was surprised when I opened the box and received it as the colour seems so abnormal for a Feotidisima. But the label says "W...... yellow", so presumably it is just meant to be very yellow. I will plant on. Has anyone else ever seen this variety before?

I would be inclined to send a query to Crocus with a photograph - it doesn't look 'right' or healthy to me. I think it's only the flowers that are more yellow than usual.

Yes, I think I will do that Wagger. It does look a bit strange doesn't it.

It looks like the old foliage is dying off but there is new growth. See what crocus say, but I'd be inclined to try it for a few weeks first.

I have emailed them a photo and question this morning. The stem is very pale, almost white in places.
