Pruning Rhus Typhina

best method to prune

On plant Rhus typhina

I think if you prune it you will encourage suckering! I like this tree but the main complaint I've heard from other people is the suckering problem. I've got one which I've had for nearly three years. I don't know how old it was when I got it but it was about 2 m tall. I have not pruned it and it has not suckered yet. My little refernce book on trees says that it does not need annual pruning, but cut back dead wood or unwanted branches.

would agree with Chris, i have one, which i bought last year, but as i found out about the succering problem with them it is now in a large pot, and it seems to be very happy and i can prune it to the shape i want without any unwanted succers in next doors lawn!
