Is it time now to start splitting Hostas, moving acers etc?

My RHS book says regarding hostas "split in spring or late summer". As for moving plants around, now is the time to do it, provided your soil is already nice and damp.

No, not now. The best time to split hostas is late august-early september. This is the time which hostas have their period of most rapid root growth. Many divide in the spring but new root growth doesn't start until the second layer of leaves form and you may be planting a plant with all leaves and no new root growth which can cause rapid desiccation so timing in the spring can be difficult. As for now, I'm afraid that there won't be time for good rooting before frost sets in. Do it at least 30 days before the first frost date.

Thanks Eclectra & Bamboo. I guess I'd better leave them be for now then or order some more I've seen some on t&m website called ice and fire. Maybe my credit
Card needs the cobwebs blowing of it :-)

Bill I would suggest you look for your hostas on a different website, many members have had problems with that particular supplier...

I wholeheartedly aggree with mg,s comment regarding t&m, I ordered some "hardy orchids" for delivery by end of september, still waiting, e-mailed them twice and they are "PLEASED" to inform me that they will be despatched in october, and they say they despatch at the optimum time for planting, {they will be in 9cm pots} I don,t think so.

I've not ordered much from there over the last year, but previous to that i never had any problems with t&m... Maybe though i'll take your advice and look elsewhere. Thanks for the warning Moon_growe and Derekm.
