how early can i sow flowers / bedding plants for early show in baskets /tubs borders etc , such as pansy's lobelias aster etc.

Lobelia and asters are summer flowering. If you planted them out now, the frost would kill them. Pansies, primulas and heathers however, are OK to go out now.

I sow the seed in Feb for these and plant out in May when all risk of frost is hopefully gone.

You could sow sweet peas now for early planting, its too early to sow annuals the best time is march or april as putting them out before mid june you would probably lose them anyway.

Or Feb as seaburngirl has said if you are impatient.

I don't usually start things like french marigolds etc. until march -in a cold greenhouse-tomatoes and such in the propagator, any earlier and they are too well grown before frost danger has gone, with the mild autumn I've noticed lots of annuals have produced seedlings and its anyones guess if the'll survive

I`m growing Pansies and Aqueligia at the moment, will start Stocks,Lobelia,Ageratum,Antirrhinum,Verbena,Sweetpeas at the end of Jan, the thing to remember is the earlier they start then the earlier they will need potting on, that means having the room to keep them protected next springtime, the way our seasons are at the moment anything could happen Lovey, if you have plenty of seed, stagger the sowing, if one lot fails you`ll have time to sow again ...
