Hi - Is there a maintenance schedule for Pieris, I have some old Pieris that are looking a bit worse for wear. Is it best to remove or can they be pruned to encourage new growth and filling out? - Poor picture attached

You can prune out and straggly or dead branches to re-shape the bush. One of ours put up a long leader which we removed.

I agree with Moon growe but I think that plant( or is there more than one) needs more than that.

I think what I would do; is insert at least four canes around it/them and encircle these with strong twine or thin wire.

This sould give you a cone shape then initially you want to cut out wayward branches.

( do this after flowering has finished)

This will give you a basic uniform shape if that is what you want.

To cut it back really hard now might kill it off.

Then next year you may be able to remove the cane/wire support and give it another generall tidy up, and hopefully it will retain its shape, if not tie it up again for another year.

You could save the trimmings and stick them in the soil against that fence behind, and thet may root thus giving you more plants.

This article will tell when and how;

Oh dear it does look sad and sorry for itself... my sense is that you have planted to near the fence and that it needs to be a good half metre further away. The soil also looks to be impoverished, did you dig in some compost before you planted Segovia and have you continued to fork in compost on the surface. Soil also looks pretty dry to me.

Hi - I would say it is about 1Mt away from the fence which is halfway between my 2 Mt border. I have 20 Tonne of topsoil being delivered soon so the borders will get a good refresh.

Well to be honest it depends on the quality of the top soil... a lot of builders will fob you off with anything and call it top soil. Don't raise the soil round the trunk of the Pieris as it wont like it.
