Patty's Plum shrivelled up

West Somerset, England Eng

I've been waiting for this Oriental Poppy to flower for ages - but look what has happened! Does anyone know why she should have shrivelled up instead of opening, please?

On plant Papaver orientale 'Patty's Plum'

If it has flowered and just dying off, you could cut off the stem and another flower will grow. If this is normal for his kind of poppy, after the flower dies, thats where the seeds are.

I only know this because I have been looking up everything and anything on google.

If it is caused by anything else, I'm lost.

No - I don't think so, as all the others are opening fine! We haven't had any frost,'s a mild area here.

Yes, I'm very was part of 'the vision' for that newly planted bed. :-(

Shall I cut the stem back?? There's a second bud appearing.

I would - but please don't beat me up if it doesn't work out :-)

Have you watered in the evening? also the plant has strong growth, making the flower too lush. It may also have had a visit from a bird,(Seagull, droppings)
Yes you can cut back with a slanting cut. It is a shame it's come at this time which is very near to your opening days.

I haven't watered in the evening, Docbob.

I'll cut it back tomorrow and keep my fingers crossed that the new bud opens in time. 10 days time!!!

How very disappointing! Over the past 2 days 4 of mine flowered magnificently and I've been waiting. I know I'd have been greatly disappointed too.

It's a new plant, so I think I'll leave it alone and just cut the stem back.

Thanks for the idea, though. :-)

Hello Spritz, I think it is just too much wet, see what happens when the other one comes out. To be honest I had Pattys Plum when it was the 'must have 'plant and met Mrs Marrow in Somerset, the lady who found it It IS beautiful for a few days when it comes out but it soon goes a dull brown(not so attractive). There are so many new poppies now,I think better than Patty's Plum.
Google ,a very good piece about it.

Thanks, Wyeboy - I read the article! Funny it was first found in Somerset, isn't it!

I'm still hoping for a flower, as the colour is right for the scheme in the bed.
