Thank you everyone who has helped with my queries so far, as I try to unscramble and identify what's still struggling to grow in a French flower garden neglected for 5 years but originally obviously loved by its previous owner, and now fascinating me! (I've concentrated on the veggies so far since I've been here). Please can you tell me what this is (I KNOW I ought to know, please forgive my "iggorance" ..!!)

Rudbeckia , I think. Not sure which one. There is one called Autumn Shades or Autumn Colours. Maybe it's that one.

It's definitely rudbeckia. I think it's Autumn Colours. Glorious!

I'm going to demonstrate ignorance here, again... Recent posts elsewhere on site suggest that this is an annual? but it's popped up here after a 4-year absence? would the seed take that long to germinate (I know my aquilegias did...)

I had always understood that rudbeckias were herbaceous perennials, and that they should come back each year. I suppose if the plant didn't make it through the winter, it might have grown from seed. As you say, sometimes seeds do take a long time to germinate.

How do I say thanks?
