what's the best way to eradicate brambles?

It really depends how big the problem is. I find that random ones that poke their way in under the fence are best tugged out at soil level - it deters them quite well. If you are trying to get rid of a whole patch, it's a different matter. I am sure someone with experience of them will be able to advise you.

Thanks, it's a perennial problem, they are well established roots under the soil. We have partly installed a patio but they keep coming through the gaps in the paving. We cut them well back but they keep coming :-(

I'm afraid you need to access the woody roots, in particular the knobbly largeish part where all the shoots come from in each plant. You cut back all the green growth, then drill into the knobbly part of the root so as to make shallow holes, and fill the holes with SBK, a brushwood killer, used neat. Then cover with something (doesn't matter what) and leave.

Thank you, that sounds like it may work

If they are coming up through your patio..maybe spray the foliage with 'Roundup' should work it's way down to the roots..but be careful if other plants or pets are it on a still day,and not in should see the leaves dying off,in a short time..If any reappear, spray again later..

I've got some Roundup but it too sunny at the moment and I also have a cat. There aren't any other plants that I need to worry about on the patio though so I will try it on a less sunny dy.

Thanks for the advice.
