Surprise visitor!

So…there I was up a ladder under my arch, tying my vigorous rose Strawberry Hill in and also cutting off the mushy roses when all of a sudden I was face to face with a small dove who was sat in the smallest of nests and wondered how he/she had managed to stay in it!
I was so near with my pruners, it’s a wonder I didn’t cut it!
I had been worrying about it not being fed and kept an eye on it for a couple of days, so imagine my surprise when it flew off and there in the nest was two eggs! Fortunately it came back to the nest, so it looks like we will be having baby doves!
It is so near to the conservatory that we may even see them leave the nest!

That is a lovely surprise. They are very timid around here and only come into our garden briefly and are soon scared off by the slightest disturbance. She must feel safe to return.

Rose, how fortunate they have decided to nest in your garden...we had a pair last year who did the same and produced 2 babies....sadly one was killed by some predator when it started leaving the nest.

How lovely for you ,we had one in our previous garden where we were lucky to be able to see into the nest from our window , it's fantastic to be able to follow the whole process from eggs to hatchlings ..

Lovely to see, I’ll bet, Rose! Sorry I missed this, they are quite timid as mentioned aren’t they! Hope she is settling well. Bet your keeping a safe eye on her.

Thanks Kate, but unfortunately , she left the nest!

Oh dear! Did she not settle then, Rose? Did she decide to try another spot?

It might have been a good thing Rose, the nest would probably have been too small for them once they started growing, they make pretty ramshackle nests anyway. It was probably a new inexperienced dove mum. She might try another nest in your garden as they breed all year round where possible. The female sits
during the day and the male takes over at night.

She left the eggs, Kate and haven't seen her nesting anywhere else.
You are right Resinone as the nest barely held the dove, let alone the eggs!

That’s really sad, isn’t it, Rose. Nature can be cruel at times..
