Winter losses: Spring options.

I managed 4hrs in the garden yesterday until the bitingly cold east wind made my back spasm. However in that time I made a reasonable dent in the weeds that were taking over the top corner of the garden. Affectionately called ‘Atrocity corner’, due to the tangle of roots, and creeping buttercups that always invade.

But while I was working away I came across lots of labels with no plants at all. Then I thought about some of the other labels I could see in the front border. Missing are all the Achillea, both Echinops, all the lupins and delphiniums. I have had the delphiniums since I grew them from seed in 1987. They have been lifted, moved gardens twice, nibbled by slugs but they have always come through. Also missing several saxifrages and pulmonaria, though I found a tiny shoot of the variegated David Ward. I lifted that and put it in a pot in the greenhouse in the hopes it will feel cherished and revive for me.

So spring options??
Well a few new to me saxifrages; S.fortunei, Cotton Crochet and S.fortunei Wadas form.
A Speirantha convallariodes and a Omphaloides nitida for the shady part.

And more spaces to consider. Do I replace the favourites or go for totally new.

Sorry no photos as OH has taken mine as its lighter to use instead of his big 35mm job.

But they will be posted once I get them in the garden and established.

Next post: lots of flowers.

Losses are always sad, but replacing them is always exciting! Look forward to seeing your pics when your new plants have settled.

Sorry you've lost so many plants, but fingers crossed they may appear yet.
Your "atrocity corner" made me smile though as I've been attempting to deal with my own atrocity corner the last few days! Progress is very slow...

there is nothing in the soil where the plants were sadly. the delphiniums in the neighbour are showing just to add insult to injury.

How sad to lose all those. Surprising that you lost the pulmonaria - I thought they were toughies. Still, as Louisa says, its an excuse to go shopping.

My pulmonarias are pathetic this year. I thought maybe I had moved them to the wrong place but maybe it is just the weather. Have fun choosing your new plants.
