Allotment Diary March 2011

First earlies are in!!!

Spent a little bit of time on my new allotment since recieving the keys in Feb. There are three main beds that are designated for roots, brassicas and spuds. The other quite large area is for fruit.

So far I had managed to dig over and remove weeds from the three main beds and I had started on what was the strawberry bed. I say was the strawberry bed as they had spread everywhere on runners. I must have over two hundred strawberry plants and there is possible at least another 30-50 to dig out.

The weeds cleared and I have rasberries. They looked liked they had been pruned previously so I am assuming that they are late autumn fruiting. I have put four more definate Autumn Bliss in just to make sure (free from a friend).

Part of the fruit bed is now clear of weeds and dug over. Today it had three Tayberries planted and two Gooseberries transplanted from my garden. A few posts erected for training the Tayberries as they grow.

My first earlies are in, along with some carrots, peas and more broad beans sown.

My wife Kelly is busy planting the spuds.

Lets hope we dont get any late frosts down here in Hampshire.

Oh and this is the plot before we started.

Amazing! It is a real transformation in no time. How did you manage all that? When I had my allotment, I took me years to cleat all the couch grass. I will certainly follow your progress.

Its been little and often. The beds had quite a bit of couch grass roots, and they were well over a spades depth down some of them. Looking forward to getting some different fruit bushes in and then building a fruit cage, oh and getting a small shed to replace the little plastic thing (pic 3) with broken doors that I inherited with the plot.
