A busy day at Standen

Phew! Quite a good workout today at Standen. We planted lots of bare-root native hedgerow plants including hawthorn, viburnum and spindle. Hope the wildlife enjoys them in the years to come. Back at home, the Nerines are just opening, a little late but very welcome. They are such an amazing shade of pink for November. Talking of pink, the Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’ is just beginning to bloom. It usually waits until the week between Christmas and New Year and carries on until spring. A few roses still spluttering on but their days are numbered as they will be hard pruned soon. I always prefer to prune early as if I leave them until later they are usually starting to sprout and then it’s more difficult (mentally!) to chop them off where they should be cut!.
