HILLTOP, Beatrix Potter's House.

I am quite a fan of that little rabbit who wears a blue coat and gets into mischief!

I would like to take you to the home of his creator Beatrix Potter, which is situated near Hawkshead in the Lake District.
Sadly there was no sign of Peter when I was there, but it was a very pretty place to visit even though the garden was past its best in late September!

Here is the outside of the house and the famous vegetable patch and the even more famous spade perhaps?

Here is the spotted handkerchief that Benjamin Bunny wrapped the onions in which made him cry! Oh yes, AND the onions!

I nearly forgot to include him, here is Benjamin with those onions!

Inside the house it was quite dark but was filled with character and had a warmth and cosiness in every room.

I took a close up of her hat and boots, she is often wearing them in old photographs.

The kitchen was a favourite room of mine, so simple and homely.

Her books were displayed around the house in places where that part of the house had been featured. There were also early sketches and letters to look at.

This is the doll’s house which was in the story of ‘The two bad mice.’ The detail inside was so lovely but my photos do not do it justice.

The inspiration for her wonderful stories was all around her. I will end by leaving her home and stepping into the beautiful Lakeland countryside that was on her doorstep.

’ Once upon a time there were four little rabbits Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter…………..’ I think you might know what happens next!

Lovely! I love that table in the kitchen with the rolling pin on it. I love simple furniture like that. :) And how poignant to have her hat and boots on her chair. I think I was 9 the first time I saw Hawkshead. I remember the hedgerows having roses and honeysuckle in them. I was overwhelmed with the beauty of it even as a child. Sadly I missed out on Peter as a child, but bought them for my own children.

What a wonderful visit. I've always loved Beatrix Potter and her animal creations. When my eldest grand daughter was born, I made a birth sampler for her, surrounded with Beatrix Potter characters. She loves it...and Peter Rabbit.

Some of those kitchen items made me feel homesick! Even had that very same crocheted centrepiece. I think it was called a Pineapple design.

Really interesting account. Thank you, WildRose.

Having visited the house myself last year, your tour did it justice. Lovely! I grew up with Peter Rabbit and recently saw a film about Beatrix' life, so moving. Thank you again.
Btw I used to think when I grew up in Holland that our then Queen Beatrix was Peter rabbits mum! Ha, ha!!

Agree with Amsterdam and the film of Beatrice's life, so poignant. Saved a lot of the Lakeland for posterity.

I missed out on Peter too but have read some since and really loved the film. Our children had an LP with some of the stories on it too. What a lovely chair that is in the kitchen. Thank you so much for the tour, it was great.

This is one place I would love to visit. My best friend from school is a big Beatrice Potter fan. She is godmother to my girls and most birthdays she would give them something to do with Beatrice Potter when they where little. She even has renamed her house "Hill Top". Thank you for posting your visit.

Lovely blog. Although we saw lots of interesting things about her life and the Lake District in the film "Miss Potter", it must have been amazing to actually be there. Thank you for a really interesting blog.

Peter Rabbit and I appreciate ALL your really lovely comments on here. Those books seem to hold very happy memories for many of us. I too enjoyed the Miss Potter film and wouldn't mind seeing it again on TV sometime.
Thank you everyone

Thank you for this, I remember her books being read to me when I was very young and then read them to my own children. She has given such pleasure to so many.

Lovely. Nothing really changes there, I visited as a child, took my own children - I have a photograph of them by the front door aged about 2 and 6, and many years later took my grandson who is now 21! I still have all the books.

Lincslass, I am so pleased that you enjoyed this blog so much.
I love Beatrix Potter's stories and the illustrations in the books are just delightful.
I think your grand daughter will treasure the books because she will sense how much you like them too.
Hope you can go there one day, it is in a beautiful part of the Lakes.
