The Garden Community for Garden Lovers

The garden has filled with opening daylilies as I approach mid season. One that I keep trying to use is ‘Watchyl Dancing Spider’. This is an early non-repeater, so of limited opportunities.

A large cascading type is ‘Above the Clouds’.

Both of these are very large, and using them as pod parents is not easy as the pollen has to travel down very long stigmas to reach the ovary; and if the stigma hangs down, gravity works against it as well as the distance it has to travel before the flower gives up and fades.
An applique that I like for the way the throat is highlighted by the eye has the designation of [(Fuoco del Sole x Spacecoast Sea Shells) x (Angel Fairy Tern x Judge Nancy)]. I need to register this just so I can shorten its name.

Another one of my crosses that is coming along nicely is (Marseilles Watercolor x Full of Treasure). It didn’t get the very ruffled edge Full of Treasure has, but it still has a picotee edge.

Another example of a picotee edge is [Emozione x (Angel Fairy Tern x Judge Nancy)]. This was taken late afternoon and holds its colors very well.

From 2019 is my ‘Pico Gaspar’.

And from 2020 is ‘Pico do Tombo’.

Finally there are the 2 siblings, (Unk x Free Wheelin’). The first is an unregistered version of the cross:

And the registered ‘Star of Portugal’ which is an Unusual Pleated form. The petals fold under near the midrib, and is a type of sculpting.

All beautiful, I have one called Black Magic and last year the flowers looked like spider flowers I was really impressed but it had never looked like this before, can they change like this over the years, I've had it about 7 years, will be interested to see how it does this year, it usually flowers pretty early but the first few flowers last year seemed to die off before opening then I got beautiful large spider flowers :-))

You are going to get odd flowers from time to time, but 'Black Magic' was registered in 1949 as a mid-season to late blooming flower, and not as a spider type. Individual soil conditions will affect how a plant acts. I have a seedling from a friend in Germany, and it is orange for him. For me it is brown. Hopefully it continues as a spider for you.

I remember your saying you tie the stigma into an elevated position to aid pollen reaching the overies more easily. Like you Crosses pics 3 & 4.

Tying them up really helps, but there is still a low rate of success.
